The IEC 61508 compliant SIL approved 2600T pressure transmitter from ABB is helping to save on life cycle costs in a real-life application, according to a recent paper

ABB Limited and its Instrumentation Alliance partner, JW Fairbairn, presented two half-day workshops at the Instrumentation Scotland and Offshore Systems exhibition on the 8th and 9th September 2004 at the Aberdeen Exhibition Centre, Scotland.

The first workshop looked at the impact of the international standards IEC 61508/61511 on safety instrumentation.

Speakers from ABB and JW Fairbairn discussed how the new standards affect the selection of instruments for safety applications, particularly in the oil and gas sector.

A case study showed how an IEC 61508 compliant SIL approved 2600T pressure transmitter from ABB is helping to save on life cycle costs in a real-life application.

"Safety authorities are now expecting companies to work to established international standards and often insist on compliance with them.

This workshop provides an essential grounding in IEC 61511 using real design examples," says Martin Kerlin of JW Fairbairn.

Delegates also saw the ABB 2600T safety transmitter for SIL applications on display at the JW Fairbairn stand, together with a range of other products suitable for use in the oil and gas industries.

The second workshop, focussed on improving the instrument supply chain.

It was of particular interest to procurement and supply chain specialists and project managers.

Delegates heard expert views on the development of the instrument supply chain and were invited to provide feedback on the type of services they require.
