ABB launches new flowmeter for dosing
applications

Building on the field proven technology of the Fischer and Porter 50SM1000 system, the FSM4000 uses increased high frequency ac excitation and digital signal processing (DSP) to optimise the flow signal to noise ratio, enabling it to offer an accuracy class of +/- 0.5% of rate.
Specialised 'piston pump' measurement algorithms are included which allow the flowmeter to compensate for measurement deviations caused by piston or peristaltic pump operation, even with high speed pump cycles.
Flow is measured bi-directionally, with any reverse flow being automatically logged and forward flow compensated accordingly.

In addition, the flowmeter DSP software evens out the flow signal without introducing additional system damping, giving stable flow readings and re-transmission outputs.
The improved signal quality produced by the DSP technology means there is no need for the FSM4000 transmitter to be routinely reset to zero to ensure continued accuracy, enabling it to offer absolute zero stability.
This, coupled with its adjustable noise damping facility, enables the FSM4000 to offer extremely fast response times of down to 50 milliseconds, making it ideal for meeting rapidly changing process conditions.
An added benefit of the use of DSP technology is its ability to collect additional information which is used by the FSM4000 to ensure continued measurement accuracy.
This information is used to continuously monitor the performance of the flowmeter coils and sensors against a pre-stored system fingerprint, and check for deviation of the signal from the original calibrated settings.
Any such deviations result in a warning message being displayed on the transmitter unit, together with an alarm which can be relayed to a centralised control system via a contact output.
As well as high performance dosing applications, the FSM is ideal for most pulp and paper, slurry and high solids content applications.
In addition, the FSM4000 is suitable for measuring very low conductivity liquids down to 0.5 microSiemens per cm by the addition of an optional signal pre-amplifier.
The FSM4000 is comprised of two elements.
The flowmeter primary element is available in sizes from 1mm to 1000mm with a variety of process connections including DIN or ANSI flanged connections, and food industry fittings such as tri-clamp and DIN11851 aseptic screw connections.
They are suitable for use in applications with fluid temperatures from -40C to 130C, with ambient temperatures ranging from -25C to 60C.
A high temperature version can also be supplied allowing maximum continuous process temperatures of 180C.
The transmitter unit can be programmed using its three push buttons or a magnetic sensor, allowing quick entry of parameters such as operating range, current and outputs.
Profibus PA, Foundation Fieldbus and HART communications protocols are also fully supported.
