JW Fairbairn, in partnership with the InstMC, will present the FREE workshops at the Instrumentation and Offshore Systems Scotland Exhibition, in Aberdeen, on Wednesday 6 September.

The workshop will be entitled "Getting Back to Basics in Instrumentation Measurement".

The programme for the day is as follows.

* 10:30 Basic concept of VA Flowmeters.

Variable area flowmeters have been used since the 1930s as a simple, accurate and versatile method of indicating the flowrate of many liquids and gases.

From the early simple glass tube designs, variable area measurement instruments have developed into a universal measurement technique suitable for an extremely wide range of process fluids and flowrates.

The introduction of metal tube VA meters has meant that high pressure hazardous area measurements are now possible.

This presentation introduces the basic principles of VA measurement, and discusses a range of applications in a number of areas, including those in the oil and gas, food and beverage and chemical industries.

VA selection is explained through a simple step by step process.

Speaker: Mathias Kirchner (ABB).

* 11:15 Principles of thermowell design.

This workshop will discuss the basic principles of thermowell design.

It will touch on specific industry terminology such as: wake frequency calculations, different manufacturing types, materials of construction, velocity collars, etc.

Speaker: Martin Cheney (ABB).

* 14.00 Fieldbus!!!-One day you just may use it! This workshop will explore the basics of fieldbus within process instrumentation (aimed primarily at the oil and gas industry).

You'll get some insight into knowledge you may use for any future projects.

The speaker will look at some of the benefits of the various brands of fieldbus and offer some practical advice around areas such as installation.

Speaker: Gareth Johnston (ABB).

Notes: All the workshops will be interactive as much as is possible, with product being available for engineers to see.

These workshops are aimed at giving engineers some basic knowledge in various areas of instrumentation measurements.

This may be knowledge gained for the first time or it may be a reminder of knowledge gained in the past.

"Our aim is that engineers go away with knowledge and more awareness of the fundamentals", says Martin Kerlin of JW Fairbairn - sponsor of the workshops (in partnership with the InstMC) and the ABB Instrumentation Alliance partner in Scotland.
