After over 15 years and thousands of installations worldwide, ABB is celebrating the production of its 500,000th MagMaster flow meter transmitter unit This milestone was marked with a special presentation to Anglian Water at the newly opened ABB customer demonstration facility at its Stonehouse factory

Anglian Water received the 500,000th unit as part of a consignment of MagMasters it recently ordered for a new project.

Since its launch, the MagMaster sensor primary and its accompanying transmitter unit have been used in a diverse range of applications with many of the first units to be produced still in operation.

Examples of installations encompass everything from sewage plants in the UK to wineries in Australia, with units installed in ambient temperatures ranging from below freezing through to extreme desert conditions.

"The robust design and reliability of the MagMaster is demonstrated by the very low number of failures that have been reported over the past 15 years," says Tony Hoyle, UK Flow Products Manager for ABB: "One of the most effective features of the MagMaster transmitter has been its single-board design.

Originally developed to prevent connection faults caused by plugging two boards together, the single-board design has continued to offer the best solution for dependable operation".

Manufactured at the ABB Stonehouse factory, MagMaster flow meters offer a high accuracy of 0.15% and a wide turndown of 1500:1, enabling users to achieve improved control and quality of water distribution networks and water treatment works.

The MagMaster IP68 rating enables the sensor to be buried, eliminating the need for meter pits or chambers and significantly cutting the time and cost of installation.

ABB experience in the manufacture and calibration of flow meters has enabled it to build units to meet individual requirements for specific applications.

"Although our standard range spans from 15 millimetres to 2.2 metres, we have manufactured MagMaster units from 2.4 metres down to just two millimetres," says Hoyle: "This is typical of our approach to building and calibrating flow meters, which is to ensure that our products exactly meet our customers' requirements.

Another example that's proved popular with customers over the years is cabling and potting sensors at our factory.

It's no problem for us, working with the ABB flexible manufacturing techniques, the customer advises their required cable length and our team cuts, fits and pots it at the sensor terminal box.

This can save hours on site trying to perform termination and wiring in often poor weather conditions".

With the arrival of the ABB CalMaster2 flow meter verification suite, the calibration of both the mains and battery-powered versions - the MagMaster and AquaMaster - can now be routinely verified in-situ, eliminating the cost and disruption associated with removing the flow meter from service.
