Faced with maintaining ageing sewage ejector systems, Southend Hospital decided to upgrade to dry well, submersible sewage pumps in an effort to improve efficiency and reduce running costs

Faced with the daunting prospect of maintaining ageing sewage ejector systems, Southend Hospital recently took the decision to upgrade to dry well, submersible sewage pumps in an effort to improve efficiency and reduce running costs After reviewing a number of options, the decision was taken to use two AFP1032 pumps, supplied by the ABS Group through their premier distributor John Gaunt Pump Supplies based in Cambridge

The solution proposed by Craig Dobson, John Gaunt Sales Manager was to install a pair of dry well pumps that would transfer sewage from the hospital site into the main sewer.

"Because of potential ragging problems and the somewhat unpredictable content of the effluent, vortex rather than channel type impeller pumps were specified," explains Mr Dobson.

Ian Chamberlain of Southend Hospital called on ABS early in the project, in order that the correct solution to the potential ragging problem could be found.

Several alternatives were put forward by the ABS engineers and other pump manufacturers also submitted systems for consideration.

Eventually, the AFP1032 was selected, which operates via an ABS Aqualevel float system.

The complete installation, which includes level control and instrumentation, uses a dry sump configuration for ease of maintenance.

ABS undertook full removal of the old pumping systems and installation of the new solution, using its own engineers.

The main benefits to Southend Hospital are the improved efficiency of the new sewage pumping system, spares availability and the maintenance capability that is available locally through John Gaunt.
