AMEC has taken an important first step towards becoming a leading energy service provider in the Balkan region with the winning of a multi-million pound Gasoline Improvement Project in northern Serbia

The deal is part of a three-year framework agreement with NIS, the Serbian state-owned oil company, and will provide project management and engineering services at the Novi Sad Refinery Work will begin immediately and continue for approximately two years as part of the refinery Clean Fuels Initiative, which will enable it to produce European-quality gasoline and diesel in economic quantities

AMEC has been involved in the project from its conception, carrying out project definition and feasibility studies.

An Integrated Project Management Team (IPMT), staffed by personnel from AMEC, Novi Sad refinery and other divisions of NIS, has been formed to manage the implementation of projects at the refinery, and to train NIS personnel in project management techniques to assist in the country's future development.

Steve Lee, Managing Director of the AMEC Downstream Oil, Gas and Process business said: "We have been leading the UK Government Energy Task Force in Serbia for the last two years, assisting with the rehabilitation of Serbian energy industries.

"This is the first major refinery development to proceed with the assistance of a western engineering company and it typifies our ability to support clients at all phases from early advice and planning through to realisation.

It is an important first step in the AMEC strategy to become a key energy service provider to the Balkan region, one of the few areas in Europe which will see significant growth in the hydrocarbon energy sector over the next decade".

Steve added that the IPMT would select the best licensed technology for a new isomerisation plant, oversee the engineering works and manage the procurement, construction and commissioning phases.

It will also manage and co-ordinate the other associated projects in the Gasoline Improvement Project.

Dimitrije Vukcevic, General Manager of NIS Oil Company of Serbia, said: "We have been very pleased with the quality of co-operation and support from AMEC over the last two years and are very happy to be moving into the realisation phase together.

AMEC understands the difficult situation in our country and has shown the confidence and determination which will be needed to make our development programme a success".

Charles Crawford, CMG, HM Ambassador in Belgrade, added.

"This is good news.

There are solid opportunities for British companies in Serbia and Montenegro to develop lasting relationships, which benefit firms on both sides and create jobs.

The AMEC success encourages other British companies to maintain the UK as a leading trading partner for this region.

I am delighted that the Embassy and Trade Partners UK have been able to play an active role in helping to win this business".

AMEC plc, the international engineering services company, provides design, project delivery and maintenance support to clients in the oil and gas; transport; infrastructure and industrial sectors.

With sales of about ?1.0 billion, the provision of total life of asset services to clients in the oil and gas industry accounts for approximately 19 per cent of AMEC total turnover and covers the Upstream, Downstream and Pipelines activities.

Overall, AMEC generates revenues of some ?5.5 billion and works at the local, national and international levels, employing 50,000 people throughout the UK, continental Europe, North America and some 40 countries worldwide.
