UK manufacturing industry is being encouraged to enter the environmental business awards scheme, particularly those companies in the UK manufacturing, engineering and process control industry sectors

The Business Commitment to the Environment Awards Scheme saw a record number of entries in 2003 Now sponsors AEA Energy and Environment are keen to ensure that even more companies - particularly those in the UK manufacturing, engineering and process control industry sectors - take part in this year's event

As Stuart Hill, Managing Director, AEA Energy and Environment, points out, "In order for there to be a significant and lasting improvement on the UK's environmental performance the challenge has to be picked up outside of government: by industry and commerce.

This is the vital contribution that the BCE Scheme plays and that is why we are proud to be sponsors".

Thousands of companies throughout the UK are already striving to improve their environmental performance, in their everyday business operations and in specific environmental projects.

The BCE Awards offer those companies a real opportunity to bring their achievements to the attention of a wider audience.

The ability to demonstrate an active commitment to the environment is also playing an increasingly important role in strengthening company reputation and relationships with customers, regulators, employees, investors and the local community.

Established almost 30 years ago, the BCE awards are now recognised as one of the most prestigious acknowledgements of environmental achievement by UK industry.

Comments Sir Anthony Cleaver, President, BCE Awards, "With over three times the number of entries in the previous years, the 2003 awards were very hard to judge.

What was particularly pleasing was the range of organisations entering and the diversity of approaches, from technological innovation to dedicated management commitment".

This year's award winners cover a real cross-section of UK industry including South East Water for 2003 for their work at Barcombe reservoir, Arctic Circle, who supply energy-efficient compressors and compression technology for refrigeration equipment, Keanes Environmental for their Trenchmod equipment that processes excavation spoil into reusable trench fill material, Ricoh Wellingborough Products for their implementation of systematic 'zero waste' policy throughout the company, and international metals company Corus for their innovative alloy coated steel Neotec with its 100% recyclability and emission-free in-use performance.

BCE are keen to encourage even more companies from all sectors of UK manufacturing industry to enter this year's awards.

Regardless of shape or size, all entries are judged entirely on environmental merit.

A business with 10 employees has the same chance of winning as a UK-based multinational.

Entries are now open for the BCE awards 2004.
