Aggreko, global leader in temporary power and temperature control solutions, has once again undertaken the task of providing the power infrastructure and climate control for a major sporting event

Aggreko, global leader in temporary power, distribution and temperature control solutions, has once again undertaken the task of providing the power infrastructure and climate control for a major sporting event The Ryder Cup takes place at the K Club in Straffan, County Kildare, Ireland on 22-24th September, with the power needs being no less daunting than the challenge facing the golfers of the US and British teams

The sheer scale of the operation is intimidating, with the cabling needs alone being enough to fill 20 large shipping containers and the temporary power, heating and air conditioning needs amount to that required to support a typical village.

Aggreko, who are accredited to ISO 14001, provided expert advice from its Event Services team who, using their vast events experience, aided the utility design, specified the equipment required and managed the installation and electrical testing.

The planning for such an event can take up to a year.

A staggering total of 9 MW of back-up generator power has been deployed, distributed along 4 km of mains cables, through modular distribution equipment and on through a further 5 km of sub-distribution extension cables.

In addition, Aggreko is supplying 4 MW of air-conditioning and heating for the corporate hospitality facilities.

At the heart of the Ryder Cup's installation are Aggreko diesel powered electricity generators that are installed both in banks for the tented villages and hospitality areas and also in strategically isolated locations - for TV power and lighting.

In all cases safety and the environment are of paramount importance with some 40,000 spectators expected around the course for each of the match-play days.

To this end, the installations benefit from the use of built-in fully bunded long range fuel tanks designed to minimise environmental risk.

As you would expect the fuel that is supplied by Aggreko's fuel management service is fully compliant with the stringent ADR safety standards.

The types of generators in use include the extremely quiet Aggreko GHP2 range, which are used wherever noise is an important consideration such as near the 18th Green commentary positions.

The generators supplied vary in size from 15 KVA canopied sets to containerised 1250KVA units that are typically used for supplying power to general hospitality facilities.

These include catering vans, corporate hospitality chalets, and the vast kitchens and catering arrangements through to merchandise tents and the power supply for broadcast equipment.

Aggreko uniquely supports the event both from its local hub and its specialist Events Services team.

Thus providing all on site organisation, fuel management and technical support for the equipment during the event.

Aggreko has broad experience of such events and has supplied not only previous Ryder Cups but also the British Open Golf Championships and many other major golfing tournaments and other public events.

"Our contribution to golf has come about as a direct result of the efforts applied within the events market over the past few years," says David Taylor of Aggreko.

"With the specialist knowledge and expertise in our Event Services team, clients have complete confidence in our ability to professionally power events, even those of the size and scale of the British Open and the Ryder Cup".
