Centrifugal cleaner for industrial liquids

An Alfa Laval product story

Alfa Laval could not have chosen a more opportune moment to launch the latest edition of Alfie, their centrifugal cleaner for treating metal-working fluids and other industrial liquids

With the news recently released by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) that dermatitis, asthma and similar illnesses cost the UK metalworking industry millions in lost work days every year, Alfa Laval could not have chosen a more opportune moment to launch the latest edition of Alfie, their centrifugal cleaner for treating metal-working fluids and other industrial liquids.

According to a statement from the HSE: "Metal-working fluids can become contaminated making them hazardous when inhaled or when they come into contact with skin.

This can lead not only to illness but also to reduced fluid and tool life and poor machine performance".

Alfie 500, the new Alfa Laval machine, has been developed specifically to deal with situations such as this.

It uses high speed centripetal force to remove tramp oils, grease and solids such as metal fines from cutting fluids and coolants; in other words all of the contaminants that cause dermatitis, eczema and other illnesses.

Capable of handling 500 litres of fluid per hour and separating out solids down to 1 micron in size, the Alfie 500 provides a high degree of operator convenience and control.

All of the key operations are controlled and monitored via a PLC-based system, with instructions and data presented in clear, simple-to-follow text message form.

Like its brothers, Alfie 500 is a completely self-contained, mobile unit which, once wheeled alongside a coolant/cutting fluid tank and plugged in, starts working immediately.

According to Alfa Laval research, the Alfie system removes more impurities more efficiently than any other system.

By removing the majority of contaminants, it not only reduces the risk of skin or chest complaints but also dramatically extends the life of the fluid.

This reduces the need for new oil, lightens the environmental load and slashes disposal costs into the bargain.

As an example of this efficiency, Alfa Laval has compiled a comparison of costs involved in running a typical machine shop with more than forty CNC machine tools: this shows that an Alfie 500 can cut costs by as much as GBP9,200; sufficient to pay for the machine in nine months.
