Compressed air flowmeter combats CC Levy

To avoid compressed air wastage, the first step is to know how much air is being used, and ideally, by which areas of the site: the ST50 flowmeter is used to identify the rate of compressed air use

A new flowmeter from Allison Engineering is being used to identify the usage rate of compressed air This is the first step towards reducing what is invariably a considerable electricity bill

Allisons model ST50 is used for targeting and monitoring purposes, being a criteria for users of compressed air and natural gas to qualify for the Enhanced Capital Allowance Scheme.

The British Confederation of Compressed Air Users report states that on average, 35% of all compressed air in UK industry is released back to the atmosphere in the form of leakage.

This reverses the age old message that compressed air is "cheap" to produce.

To avoid such wastage, the first step is to know how much air is being used and ideally, by which areas of the site.

Unlike conventional turbine or orifice plate technology, the Allison thermal dispersion Model ST50 flowmeter is a no-moving-parts probe, which can easily be inserted into the line using a 1 inch BSP tapping point.

It can even be removed "live" through a ball valve, at pressures up to 14Bar.

The combination of a competitive unit cost and ease of installation, make the ST50 the lowest cost option and it requires no modification to the pipeline itself.

Furthermore, it measures actual mass flow, rather than just velocity and therefore provides directly meaningful results.

The flowmeter output can be logged and time stamped in the BMS, or using a simple data logger.

The Allison ST50 can be used at three different levels to measure total air flow to.

(a) the entire factory.

(b) individual production areas, thus enabling air "billing" to autonomous business units.

(c) individual machines at point of use.
