A new book from the ISA is entitled "Cascading Logic: A Machine Control Methodology for Programmable Logic Controllers", describing functional machine control programmes for industrial equipment

Gary Kirckof wrote this book for operators and maintenance personnel who must troubleshoot and maintain the equipment after it is put into operation, as well as for programmable logic controller programmers The book provides programmers with the confidence they need to reach decisions and move forward with certainty that the program is performing as intended without odd combinations of logic causing unintentional actions

Cascading logic is a programming methodology for generating machine-control programs.

It is used for industrial equipment that is sequential and controlled by a programmable logic controller.

Cascading logic creates robust and reliable programs that are easy to write, easy to debug, and easy to maintain.

It also saves time for both the programmer and the end user of the equipment by minimising downtime and producing better machinery.

The book starts by breaking the machine into its basic elements.

These small and manageable elements allow the programmer to focus on large concerns before dealing with specifics.

The methodology then shows the reader how to program each element and how to assemble the elements together into a complete machine control program.

Ladder logic illustrations throughout the book demonstrate each part of the text.

The ladder logic examples use the instruction set for the Allen Bradley SLC 500 programmable logic controller, but the concepts and techniques presented can be applied to any brand of programmable logic controller.

Operators, maintenance personnel, and programmers of programmable logic controllers will learn how to create a functional machine control program for industrial equipment and be able to troubleshoot and maintain the equipment.

The book retails for GBP44.
