GRP tank covers installed in a single day
Speed of installation and minimal disruption were the important benefits appreciated by Water Services of Ireland in a recent project by specialist GRP cover designers AMi Designs
The project was particularly challenging as a result of unusually heavy snow falls experienced during January which coincided with the installation.
AMi Director Darren Bishop, who was the engineering coordinator supervising the project, commented, 'We have installed many of this type of cover, but the additional snow loads experienced during installation required us to re-assess our installation procedures, especially as the cover stood 3 metres above ground during assembly and was extremely slippery to work on'.
He continued, 'We were also concerned about the increased overall weight of the cover for the final crane lift to position the completed cover on the tank'.
Darren confirmed that a closer look at the environmental design loadings was crucial to the success of the project.
This required a re-calculation of the design lift weight to include and allow for the full design load including environmental loads, not just the 'dead loads' (self-weight) as we would normally do.
This required a larger capacity crane to keep the installation on track, despite the snow, mud and challenging winter conditions.
Joe Riley of Roadbridge, the Civil Engineering Contractor on the project said, We really appreciated the efforts of AMi including the late nights to ensure the project was kept on schedule, despite the challenging wintry conditions'.
He continued, 'We were keen to have a bespoke tank cover designed to complement the existing covers on the site and AMi's design certainly does that'.
The 23.3 meter self-supporting GRP cover is fitted with 4 large access openings in a typical configuration which can be fitted to any one of the eight basic cover designs that AMi have developed.
AMi Designs was established by Directors Kevin Daykin and Darren Bishop, who are both qualified structural engineers.
Thanks to a range of successfully completed projects, AMi is enhancing its reputation in the design, manufacture and installation of innovative GRP cover designs.
