An Applied Market Information product story
Edited by the Processingtalk editorial team May 14, 2008

The sixth MERL 2-day international conference on Oilfield Engineering with Polymers conference will be held in London on 7 - 8th October 2008

This year the conference is jointly organized with Applied Market Information.

It will be the focal point for operators and component suppliers to the oilfield industry to debate the use of thermoplastics, composites and elastomers in critical applications.

They are found in coatings, insulation, pipes, hoses, seals, flexible joints and bearings, inflatable tools, umbilicals, risers, blow out preventers etc.

The industry challenge is to operate safely and reliably under a wide range of operational and environmental conditions.

Saipem will kick off the conference with an overview of what the oil industry wants from materials.

Saudi Aramco and ExxonMobil will highlight the issues arising from failure investigations in different applications.

The University of Leoben has examined failure due to rapid gas decompression.

These papers highlight the extreme conditions prevalent in the oilfield environment.

MERL has been involved in materials testing for many years - the MERL paper at the conference will cover qualification testing for Norsok M710.

ERA has researched the longevity of mooring lines.

Halliburton, Saint-Gobain and Seals Eastern are working on sealing solutions, and Oil States Industries is looking at the use of elastomers in bearings.

Baker Oil Tools has looked at bonding of fluoroelastomers for downhole applications.

The potential uses of new fluoroelastomer materials will be described by Solvay Solexis.

Baker Oil Tools has been working with expandable packer compound.

Trelleborg Viking has used fire resistant rubber offshore.

Lanxess has a new HNBR innovation to withstand severe oil and fuel exposure conditions.

Pipe is a major application of polymers in oilfield.

Wellstream is active in this field and Pipelife has reinforced thermoplastic pipe with fibres from Teijin Aramid.

Daikin and Evonik have combined fluoropolymers and polyamides in barrier layers.

Ticona has tested thermoplastic barrier layers in hydrogen sulphide exposed gas well gathering lines.

DuPont has innovative coating materials for downhole.

Automated Dynamics has incorporated electronics into composites to monitor performance.

PEEK is an established high performance material and Victrex will be describing its potential.

Lanxess has explored the use of elastomers in offshore cables.

Z+N Technical Development has worked on high pressure hose production.

Oilfield Engineering with Polymers 2008 takes place in the heart of London and aims to attract the key materials experts from the core of the oilfield industry.

Oilfield Engineering with Polymers 2008 is from 7-8 October 2008 at the Cavendish Conference Centre, London, UK.
