This will be the first in a series of top-level international scientific conferences, focusing on topics where the region of Aquitaine has recognized expertise: polymers, neurosciences, and lasers

The Aquitaine Regional Council are organizing the 1st "Aquitaine Polymers" Conference, to be held in Arcachon (Gironde/France) on 16-19 October 2007.

This conference will bring together the world's leading scientists on the initiative and under the joint chairmanship of Yves Gnanou, President of the organic polymer chemistry laboratory, and Alain Rousset, President of the Aquitaine Regional Council.

Aquitaine is in the forefront of innovative work in this area, setting European and international benchmarks, particularly in the field of new polymer materials - thermoplastic composites, nanomaterials, biodegradable materials, and bio-materials, thanks, especially, to organizations such as the LCPO (Organic polymer chemistry laboratory), the LPCP (Polymer physical-chemistry laboratory), CRPP (Paul Pascal research center), and ICMCB (Bordeaux condensed matter chemistry institute).

Special, intensive effort is being devoted to several priority issues, recognized as particularly important by the polymer science community, where this region is involved in a number of joint scientific projects on national, European, and international levels.

Aquitaine has a major, on-going commitment to supporting research - indeed it is the leading French Region in terms of its R+D budget.

The aim of this first international conference is to convey a strong message to the scientific community, as well as offering a unique opportunity, especially for younger scientists, to develop contacts and exchange ideas at the highest level.

The "2007 Aquitaine Polymer conference" will provide an opportunity for the world's leading researchers, including a Nobel Prize winner, to discuss the latest concepts and new directions for their research.

The topics for discussion will be as follows.

* Synthesizing precision polymers: Krzysztof Matyjaszewski / USA, Mitsuo Sawamoto / Japan, (moderator: Henri Cramail).

* Supramolecular chemistry: Ivan Huc Bert Meijer / Netherlands, Roeland J Mr Nolte / Netherlands (moderator: Ayyappanpillai Ajayaghosh / India).

* Films and surfaces: Jacob N Israelachvili / USA, Gunter Reiter / France (moderator: Philippe Richetti).

* Hierarchies and nanometric structures in polymer materials: Ludwik Leibler / France, Axel Mueller / Germany (moderator: Thierry Toupance).

* Materials designed for specific applications: Alan J Heeger / Nobel Prize 2000 / USA, Jean J Mr Frechet / USA, Ann-Christine Albertsson / Sweden, Markus Antonietti / Germany, Elliot Chaikof / USA, Yoshihito Osada / Japan (moderators: Henri Cramail - Etienne Duguet - Philippe Poulin).

* Challenges in formulation and treatment: Eugena Kumacheva /Canada, Tom C B McLeish / United Kingdom, Eric J Amis / USA (moderator: Ahmed Allal).
