Welding and fabrication specialist Arc Energy Resources completed two fast-track weld overlay cladding projects for the Pembroke refinery of Chevron Texaco, each one completed in under two weeks

Gloucestershire based welding and fabrication specialist Arc Energy Resources has recently completed two fast-track weld overlay cladding projects for the Pembroke refinery of Chevron Texaco, each one completed and delivered in under two weeks Foster Wheeler Energy Ltd operates a term services contract at the Chevron Texaco Pembroke refinery, with responsibilities for new projects, engineering design, repair and refurbishments, procurement and project management

When the company needed specialised weld overlay cladding for two urgent projects involving exotic alloys, one of their engineers recommended Arc Energy Resources, a supplier he'd worked with in the past.

Both contracts were for projects that had to be completed before a major shutdown, which is why the timescales were so critical.

The first required the refurbishment and modification of a 16" to 12" carbon steel pipeline reducing cone.

Explains Arc Energy sales manager Alan Brown: "The component needed to be refurbished and at the same time we applied a 3mm weld overlay coating of Monel 400 through the reducer and sealing base to ensure durability.

"We were also asked to fit a new Monel weldolet to replace an existing carbon steel outlet, which involved qualifying a new welding procedure witnessed by an independent surveyor".

A spokesman for Foster Wheeler reports that even with the new procedure, the reducing cone was delivered in two weeks.

"We were very pleased with the workmanship and service, and impressed with the fast turnaround," he says: "There were tight deadlines on this project and fortunately Arc Energy delivered!".

He added that the second contract, a replacement two-inch Scorpion Injection nozzle from a crude oil column, was even more time critical.

"An existing component had been repaired on site to maintain production and we had scheduled the shut down to install the new nozzle," he says.

Arc Energy sourced a new component, which took a week, applied a stainless steel 316 L weld overlay and machined it to Foster Wheeler's specification, all within two weeks.

Alan Brown continued: "With something this critical we didn't want anything to go wrong, so we even delivered it to the site ourselves!".
