DNV to qualify AK carbon capture technology

Aker Kvaerner has awarded DNV a contract to qualify the carbon capture technology which will be used in the Just Catch bio demo plant

Aker Kvaerner intends to build a CO2 capture demonstration plant in Norway linked to a gas-fired power plant.

It will be based on the Aker Kvaerner Just Catch technology, which is being developed together with twelve industrial partners in addition to Gassnova, a subsidiary of the Norwegian Ministry of Petroleum and Energy.

The demonstration plant will have the capacity to clean 10% of the flue gas from a 420 MW power plant.

It will be developed in two phases.

Firstly, the Just Catch plant will be run using exhaust from the gas-fired power plant.

Secondly, a bio plant providing steam will be fully integrated with the demo plant.

The technology will therefore be designed to clean flue gas from natural gas fired and bio power plants, in addition to flue gases with CO2 concentrations similar to those from coal-fired plants.

Aker Kvaerner is putting a lot of prestige into solving the CO2 challenges and needs to be certain that the technology works as planned with as low a risk as possible.

The systematic approach to the technology qualification process forces developers of new technology to focus on high-risk elements and on ways of preventing the identified high-risk failures.

As a completely independent company, DNV will issue a Statement of Endorsement once the novel aspects of the Just Catch bio demo plant technology are documented as being feasible.
