Asco cylinders control a motion actuated
artwork

Greyworld, a group of installation artists, turned to Emerson Industrial Automation for 300 Asco Numatics Cylinders when they wanted to actuate one of their latest works of art, called "Bloom"

Occupying the full height of a ten story atrium, in an office block located in Spitalfields, London, the 55m installation contains hundreds of blooms that "burst in to life" in response to the motion of people as they move about in the space Designed specifically for the application by the Asco team of designers, the 300 assemblies that were supplied consist of double acting Isoclair (ISO-6432) round cylinders, close coupled to 519 series 5/2 solenoid valves

On receipt of a signal the cylinder extends pushing the flower out of its casing, like a reverse umbrella.

The cylinders were equipped with adjustable restrictors, either end, to control the flower opening and closing speeds.

The valve circuit was complete with all the relevant fittings to simplify installation and commissioning.

Greyworld was founded in Paris in 1993 by Andrew Shoben with the stated goal of "creating works that articulate public spaces, allowing some form of self-expression in areas of the city that people see every day but normally exclude and ignore".

Bloom is one of their most recent installations.

The work of art occupies the full height of the office building central atrium and it responds to the motion of people as they enter the space or travel up in the glass lift.

It also captures the effect of different levels of light in the space, so as the sun shines the flowers gently bloom, opening their petals up to the sunlight.

At quieter periods throughout the day the sculpture generates patterns based on an infinite library of forms, ensuring that the work of art is an elegant, ever-changing heart at the centre of the building.

"We have a team of highly experienced engineers based at our Skelmersdale facility who are responsible for engineering fluid power solutions," said Jean Christophe Serkumian, managing director of Asco Numatics in the UK.

"This was one of the more unusual applications we have worked on and we are proud to have been involved in this spectacular art project".

Asco Numatics has over 100 years experience in the fluid power and fluid control markets and serves customers in various sectors such as the food, packaging, handling, chemical, petrochemical, energy, wood and paper, and automobile industries.

With an ever-expanding catalogue, the company offers a wide range of products for industrial automation (pneumatic components) as well as fluid control components (solenoid and pressure operated valves).

Their reliability, sturdiness, performance and ease of installation are qualities for which they are highly recognised. Request a free brochure from Asco Numatics ...
