The COLT is the AnTech coiled tubing drilling (CTD) bottom hole assembly (BHA), designed to reliably drill wells in an underbalanced condition, vastly improving productivity.
Building on success since 1993, AnTech has been designing and producing tools that have been used to carry out successful CT drilling, expandable, milling and jarring operations.
These tools rely on the same technologies as those featured by the COLT.

The COLT was designed to access environments that were previously thought to be uneconomic to drill.
"With the COLT, it is now possible to carry out short radius underbalanced CTD for gas because we have greatly reduced the risk of formation damage said Toni Miszewski, Managing Director of AnTech.
Not only is it a capable and reliable tool that addresses the problems that have plagued CTD, the fact that it is shorter than competing systems means that on every front, it is also less expensive to operate, transport and rig up and down.
And that is extremely important in todays market".
This innovation represents a major breakthrough, especially for contractors drilling in reservoirs and gas formations.
Despite its apparent suitability, CTD has not performed particularly well with gaseous drilling fluids, primarily due to the harsh environment that exists within the well bore.
Because the nitrogen foams and light fluids used do not provide effective damping, downhole tools are subjected to high vibrations and shocks generated by the drilling process, resulting in the low reliability exhibited by some earlier BHAs.
With plans in the works to drill test wells in Australia, Canada and the UK, the system has already undergone rigorous pressure, temperature and vibration testing at AnTechs specialist testing facilities in Exeter.
These tests were carried out to ensure that the COLT is durable and capable of withstanding the demands of coiled tubing drilling for gas.
To enhance durability, the COLT is fitted with a connector that uses a proprietary thread that offers the benefits of metal-to-metal sealing.
The AnTech COLT can be steered with ease while drilling through the rock strata of the extremely hostile gas well environment.
The systems unique directional control mechanism allows the COLT to be steered in any direction while drilling.
This is made possible by the systems new electrically powered orienting tool called the Pointing Orienter.
The Pointing Orienter gives the operator the ability to change the direction of the COLT very quickly, and with great precision allowing the prospect for drilling the build section and the lateral section in one trip.
The COLT is equipped with sensors and telemetry to provide the operator with real-time information.
Armed with up-to-the-second information gathered as the system moves within the reservoir, the operator can then run the system with optimum efficiency.
The AnTech COLT is designed to overcome these obstacles, and makes it possible to carry out underbalance CTD in a number of ways, as follows.ELECTRICAL POINTING ORIENTER OFFERS PRECISE CONTROL.
The COLT BHA provides precise control of the drill bit orientation with the use of an electrically driven pointing orienter.
It offers the advantages of the bend being continuously adjustable (from 0deg to 3deg) whilst drilling; and the reactive torque from the drilling motor is transmitted through the tool housing, not the pointing orienter mechanism itself.
The continuously adjustable bend means that holes can be drilled straighter reducing the chances of getting stuck.
Because the torque is not transmitted through the pointing orienter drive we have been able to produce a strong tool in a slimhole package.
REAL-TIME FEEDBACK ASSISTS DRILLING DECISIONS.
To provide real-time feedback to the operator on downhole conditions, tool position and geological formation, the COLT is equipped with sensors that rely upon wireline telemetry to gather this data.
Sensors include a pressure compensated weight-on-bit sensor and pressure sensors in addition to the steering and gamma ray sensors.
This information is continually transmitted to the COLT display panel at surface.
The operator can then analyse this data to make informed drilling decisions that will be critical to the success of the operation.
ROBUST DESIGN KEY TO RELIABILITY.
To ensure that the system is completely reliable and will withstand the shock and vibration it is subjected to while operating downhole, the COLT offers several key features.
The physical layout of the tool and its packaging is designed to be resistant to the damaging effects of drilling vibration.
To validate the companys representation that it is extremely robust and reliable, the COLT is being subjected to a rigorous and intensive vibration-testing programme.
In order to further bolster the COLTs ability to withstand the gaseous drilling fluid environment and prevent failures, it is fitted with durable metal-to-metal seals.
Its specially designed smooth flow-path also means that the tool is less affected by fluid-induced wear and vibrations.
RIGGING UP MADE SIMPLE.
With its extremely compact size, the COLT is easy to rig-up, requiring just one connection to the coil and one connection to the drilling motor.
The rig-up time at the wellhead is reduced to minutes.
