ABB has supplied a packaged analytical system worth GBP145k to contractor Alstom as part of an upgrade at a chemical plant in Cheshire.

Steam is used in the process for chemical production at the site.

Comprising a host of analytical equipment, the system will be used to monitor the purity of water throughout the plant water and steam circuits.

ABB supplied the instruments pre-fitted in a dedicated cabin measuring 10 metres long by 2.4 metres wide by 2.7 metres high.

By supplying the instruments as a packaged system, the majority of the assembly work can be carried out off-site, minimising any on-site disruption by enabling the system to be simply connected up.

The cabin contains equipment for the measurement of six pH and 15 conductivity / cation conductivity loops.

Accompanying these are three dissolved oxygen meters and 26 PurgeMaster flow indicators to ensure the efficient control of the individual samples to the instruments.

A Total Organic Carbon analyser is also fitted, which will be used to check for the presence of organics in the condensate from the chemical plant.

The cooling system supplied is somewhat unusual because the site has a limited demineralised water supply that is not sufficient to operate the sample coolers effectively.

To overcome this, a separate cooling water skid has been provided.

This has two discrete water circuits.

The primary side of a heat exchanger uses water from the local canal whilst the secondary "closed loop" uses demineralised water that is used for the actual cooling of the sample via the coolers.

The maximum sample inlet temperature is 475C.

The heat exchanger has titanium plates in order to withstand any corrosive/erosive contaminants in the primary water and it also has very wide plate separation to ensure that any particulate in the primary water does not cause premature clogging of the exchanger.

The system was shipped in March, with commissioning due for late summer 2005.

ABB has over 25 years experience in building packaged system assemblies and can offer a wide choice of standard designs which can be customised to suit individual applications.

Supplied fully pre-manufactured and pre-tested, ABB packaged system assemblies are delivered ready for operation.

Only connection to samples, drains, power supply and signal outputs is necessary on site.
