New smoke venting motors from ABB can now take advantage of the surrounding airstream for cooling when mounted inside a ventilation duct The motors do not require fans or fan covers and the high air flow available from the main ventilation fan in many cases enables the motor rating to be increased without exceeding the motor temperature rise limits

This means a smaller motor size can often be selected, saving cost.

The motors are designed to mitigate the development of fires in industrial and public buildings, tunnels and other locations.

They have dual-purpose certification, enabling use also for standard ventilation.

The motors are tested to withstand temperatures up to 400C for two hours.

Smoke venting motors are used in emergency ventilation to create smoke-free areas for rescue and fire fighting operations, as well as helping to reduce the spread of smoke and fire to other areas.

ABB smoke venting motors comply with the European standard EN 12101-3, which became mandatory in new installations on April 1, 2005.

The standard determines the safety requirements to be fulfilled by motors intended for ventilation systems in closed or underground public spaces.

A new brochure is available on the ABB range of smoke venting motors.

The new brochure also highlights how energy-saving variable speed drives can be used with ABB smoke venting motors.

ABB smoke venting motors range from 0.55 to 560 kW, IEC frame sizes 80 to 400.

Two-pole motors are available up to frame size 250 and 4-12 pole up to 400 frame size, single or two-speed, in aluminium or cast iron.

Pad mounting is available from size 280 and above.
