Selection of motors for variable speed
drive use
ABB Process Performance motors are now available designed to NEMA standards, meeting the needs of exporting OEMs wishing to target process industries where North American standards apply
The Process Performance range is designed for reliability and high efficiency, featuring improved cooling to extend the life of the bearings and windings, addressing the causes of 90% of motor failures This is now available in a motor range designed to NEMA and CSA standards (NEMA MG-1-1988, IEEE 112-1996, CSA file C22.2 no 100.95), meeting the needs of exporting OEMs wishing to target process industries in countries operating to these standards

Data for over 500 motors now available online
Motor performance curves, data sheets and drawings for low voltage AC motors, from 0.055 to 710 kW, are now available from the ABB website: data for more than 500 motors to be downloaded or viewed
NEMA and CSA standards are used in the North American market and other regions where US engineering standards dominate.
The standards are common in many Central and South American countries, as well as key Asian markets, such as Korea, Japan and Taiwan.
OEMs working with the process industries in these countries can rely on the ABB NEMA motors to provide superior reliability and performance through many years of continuous operation.
The totally enclosed, fan cooled, three-phase squirrel cage type motors are available with 2, 4, 6 or 8 poles in frame sizes from 404 to 588, offering a power output from 100 to 800 horsepower.
Innovative cooling fins are included on the end shield of the motors for the first time.
These are designed to reduce bearing temperatures and thereby lengthen bearing life.
The new range is also available with a wide range of options, such as 13 choices of bearings and lubrication, seven types of environmental protection and three options for winding insulation.
This outstanding flexibility makes the motors suitable for incorporation into pumps, fans and other equipment targeting a wide range of demanding process applications.
The motors are designed both for variable speed and direct-on-line use.
When selecting motors for variable speed use, a number of considerations should be taken into account.
These are all outlined in a free 28-page brochure produced by ABB, which describes the available options in detail.
The new brochure is available from the BrochureLine, or alternatively, it can be ordered on-line via the energy section of the website.
