Beamex calibration on straw fired power station

A Beamex product story
Edited by the Processingtalk editorial team Sep 28, 2007

Beamex have recently been contracted by EPR to supply their world-class integrated calibration solution for the Elean Power Station near Ely - the world's largest straw burning power station

Ely Power Station at 38MW, is the largest straw burning power station in the world, generating over 270GWh each year.

Ely has a wide ranging planning permission and has successfully burned oil seed rape and miscanthus in addition to its usual fuel of cereal straw.

The 200,000 tonnes pa fuel demand of the plant is supplied by Ely Power sister company, Anglian Straw.

The plant is highly efficient, generating steam at 540C and 92bar.

Noted for its high reliability Ely achieves one of the highest load factors of any renewable energy plant.

In June 2004 Energy Power Resources (EPR) took over the operation and maintenance of the plant from the main plant constructor, FLS Miljo.

Careful control of operations will allow EPR to burn a wider range of fuels opening up the potential for reducing fuel costs and increasing security of supply.

In addition, the in-house experience of the EPR operations team in scheduling maintenance effectively will further increase output and reduce costs.

Beamex are proud to be part of this fantastic project, and to be involved in helping create power for the UK from a renewable source.

The integrated calibration solution provided by Beamex includes the well-respected combination of the MC multifunction documenting calibrators and Beamex CMX Professional calibration software allowing the seamless and electronic flow of calibration data from calibration software to calibrator and back.

This seamless and electronic flow of data minimises the error-prone requirement for hand written data entry and accelerates the whole process leading to savings in time and cost.

The system also documents automatically all calibration results.

In addition to the time and cost savings, other reasons for choosing Beamex MC calibrators and Beamex CMX calibration software were the capability to communicate with and calibrate the HART and Foundation Fieldbus transmitters used on the plant, operate within a paperless environment, and be able to share the calibration results across the corporate network.
