Adjacent to another monumental building, London's St Pancras Station, sits the British Library, a veritable Aladdin's Cave for everyone who seeks knowledge

The modern mission statement of the British Library is "Helping people advance knowledge to enrich lives" and it is based on this statement from the Act that founded the National Collection in 1753 "For public use to all posterity" Quaint English but although containing 150 million items the earliest being dated 1100 BC, three million new items are incorporated every year, which includes a copy of every item published in Britain

Not surprisingly, when constructed the British Library was the largest building in London and has the deepest basements in London at 24.5 meters.

Some of the most serious risks to such a unique collection of documents are relative humidity, high temperature, high levels of light and exposure to airborne pollutants.

The humidity control centre lies at the lowest basement level and comprises two Babcock Wanson model ESM 1000 Eurosteam Packaged high efficiency compact Steam Generators where precisely controlled quality steam is produced for accurate injection into the filtered ambient and re-circulated air.

This important feature of the services for the British Library ensure that optimum conditions are maintained for the preservation of not only the priceless records, books and electronic data but also the welfare of the 2000 staff and 16,000 users of the collection each day.

The boiler plant was manufactured, supplied and installed by Babcock Wanson UK and because of its rapid response to changes in environmental conditions and its precise electronic control, it is the ideal system for this duty.

Full automatic standby and load sharing are key features of this installation, which help ensure the security of the steam supply.

Babcock Wanson Eurosteam Generators operate at the highest flexible efficiency with optional economisers and emission control enhanced by partial exhaust gas recirculation should this be required.

Babcock Wanson operates from establishments throughout the world and particularly in Europe providing all types of energy transfer equipment.

In addition we offer a complete After Sales service including full feed water analysis and pre-treatment to ensure the installed steam plant is kept in the best possible condition.

Thermal Fluid Systems and specialist Airborne Effluent treatment equipment form part of the Babcock Wanson wide range of energy products and systems.
