In awarding the certification, the inspectors have certified that BASF IT Services has a set of rules regarding data security, known as a Management System, that complies with the standard.
The certification process includes an examination both of the security level of equipment, such as access authorisation controls at computer centres, and the methods used to protect IT systems.
The crucial factor for successful certification is that employees should attach great importance to the issue of data security.
They must not leave confidential information lying around openly in sight, and must know and apply the legal requirements placed on them.
"This certification is very important to us, because it provides evidence of the great value we place on data security at our company", said Dr Kurt Ettmuller, Managing Director of BASF IT Services, responsible for the Finance and Corporate Functions Division.
"It also proves to our clients that we treat the data they entrust to us with great care".
The certification is not simply a one-off inspection; the company must continue at regular intervals to provide evidence of data security procedures.
The certificate is renewed each year following a "repeat audit" procedure.
Full re-certification is required after three years.
