BASF IT Services is to help the municipality of Ludwigshafen standardise its computer environment, to improve efficiency and reduce costs

BASF IT Services helps the municipality of Ludwigshafen to standardise its computer environment 1,600 public service workplaces will have standard hardware and software after the so-called roll-out

Where required, specialised software components for municipal administration etc, can be incorporated.

Thereby, the number of programmes used drops to approx 400 - that is one third less than before - and also data exchange is easier.

Ludwigshafen and BASF IT Services reckon that by eliminating IT 'island' solutions, council work will be more efficient and less costly.

"We are delighted that we have found, in the BASF IT Services, a highly competent regional partner to handle our IT requirements", explains Dr Eva Lohse, Ludwigshafen Mayoress.

"This standardisation helps us to reduce our costs, which in the time of empty coffers, is extremely important for the municipality".

Wolfgang Erny, Managing Director of BASF IT Services, says, "We are not selling a product but solutions.

Thus, we help our customers, both inside and outside the BASF Group, to be more successful".

BASF IT Services is also responsible for the on-site support for everything concerning computers.

This means that in the case of a problem, municipal workers can turn to the Customer Service Center (CSC), BASF IT Services central call center, which is located in Schwarzheide, Brandenburg, and is also the point of contact for ten thousands other users in Europe.

The change to the new IT landscape started in May and should be completed by autumn.

Currently, only 1,200 of the 1,600 computers required are to be exchanged, because the municipality of Ludwigshafen can retain 400 of its existing PCs.

The manufacturer Dell is to supply the new computers.

BASF IT Services loads the computers with the appropriate software, actually by remote control via its network.

Thereafter, IT experts deliver the machines, install them and put them into operation.

BASF IT Services know-how with regard to standardising PCs has been well proven following a major project for the BASF.

In just 13 months, BASF IT Services installed approx.

31,000 new PCs in all the BASF locations throughout Europe, significantly increased the service capacity of the corresponding network and reorganised the support service accordingly.

As with the borough of Bobenheim-Roxheim, the municipality of Ludwigshafen is another customer from the public service sector.
