The eCl@ss system now makes it possible for companies to classify their products and services with a worldwide standard 'goods grouping code', independent of the branch.
"eCl@ss enables the worldwide exchange of information on products and services along the entire value-added chain within a company, from the development via sales up to its disposal," says Wolfgang Erny, Managing Director of BASF IT Services.
The classification standard, for instance, simplifies international tenders because suppliers can offer their products and services with a defined eCl@ss description.

BASF IT Services supports companies wanting to introduce eCl@ss.
For example this includes comprehensive consulting and programming services in the SAP area, as well as the process consulting in the e-Business area and implementation into the ERP systems.
Furthermore, BASF IT Services offers help with the connection of electronic catalogues and market places and supports companies in the running and monitoring of catalogue systems.
eCl@ss is an international classification standard, which is now available in six languages, German, English, French, Italian, Spanish and Chinese.
Additional languages are in preparation.
The classification according to eCl@ss is based on a four-level structure, which covers all the sales and procurement markets.
Products and services are sectioned into subject areas, which are then divided into multiple sub-groups.
Each level is characterised through a two-digit key code, so that an eCl@ss number is compiled out of eight digits.
The class of a mobile phone is for example clearly described through the eCl@ss number 19-06-01-06.
In the sub-groups, attributes pertaining to the product description can be found in the standard attributes.
Key words simplify the search in the eCl@ss catalogue.
With the growing number of users, the structure of eCl@ss will also continue to expand.
The actual eCl@ss version 5.1 contains approximately 22,400 sub-groups, 11,300 standard attributes and 51,000 key words.
eCl@ss was founded in 2000 by leading companies in German industry, such as VW, Audi, BASF, E.ON and SAP".
More and more companies recognise the benefits, which eCl@ss offers as an international classification standard," says Friedhelm Hausmann, Chairman of the Board of eCl@ss.
Amongst other things, the society has a cooperation contract together with the German Standards Institute ('DIN') and is the official 'liaison' partner of various ISO/IEC committees, where eCl@ss has been established as an international standard.
Companies do not have to pay for participating in the professional groups of eCl@ss.
Since January 2005, a scientific council compiled from high schools and research institutes, has joined in developing and widening eCl@ss in the realms of science.
