Ciba to rely on BASF IT Services

A BASF IT Services product story
Edited by the Processingtalk editorial team Jun 27, 2008

With BASF IT Services we've found a partner who has not only broad international experience, but also many years of experience in process expertise in the chemical sector, says Ciba

In 2005 BASF IT Services already successfully implemented the software solution SAP EH+S (Environment, Health and Safety) at the locations of the chemical company in Europe, North and South America, South Africa and in the Middle East.

A new frame agreement has now been signed covering continuing collaboration.

In addition to support for the new SAP systems, the contract also covers the development of all necessary country-specific enhancements as well as implementation of the IT solution at additional Ciba locations in Asia.

Furthermore BASF IT Services is implementing the new SAP component SVT (Substance Volume Tracking) for its customer, making it possible to track the amounts of all chemical substances produced within the company or imported from countries outside the EU.

This information is required for legally compliant realisation of the new EU chemicals regulation REACH, which controls the registration, evaluation and approval of chemical substances.

Recent years have seen a continuing worldwide increase in legal regulations concerning both human and environmental safety.

Ciba decided on the IT solution SAP EH+S in order to meet these requirements reliably.

The solution is a comprehensive system combining business-oriented aspects and legal regulations and making them more easily accessible to the user.

Based on this standard SAP application, BASF IT Services implemented a package solution at Ciba which has been tested in practice and enables gap-free product and environmental management.

The new system contributes to the linking of all logical processes in the manufacture of products with functions for commercial environmental protection and occupational safety.

The decisive advantage of this integrated solution is that all data is now available in a consolidated system and can be accessed completely and immediately anywhere needed.

The solution implemented by BASF IT Services thus ensures standardisation while at the same time accounting for all country-specific special factors.

From the Brazilian accident procedures sheet, to the US materials safety data sheet, the German waste manifest or the Japanese Yellow Card transport document: Legal regulations in the areas of product safety, occupational safety and waste management vary from country to country.

With focused adaptation of the system to these differing requirements, BASF IT Services has made it possible for its customer to execute business processes around the world securely, efficiently and in compliance with legal requirements, while still retaining a consistent software standard.

"With BASF IT Services we've found a partner who has not only broad international experience, but also many years of experience in process expertise in the chemical sector.

It's highly important to us to be able to rely on a complete solution which has been thoroughly tested in practice and which is constantly undergoing further development, especially in the area of environmental protection and occupational safety" says Gunter Fritz, head of Group Environment, Health and Safety at Ciba.

"For companies in the process industry, efficient IT-supported compliance management means competitive advantages reaching well beyond compliance with legal and commercial regulations," adds Dr Ralf Sonnberger, Managing Director at BASF IT Services.

"We're glad our expertise can help our customer deploy processes more efficiently in order to reduce corporate risks and ultimately to help cut costs".
