Since installing two Berson medium pressure UV disinfection systems, wastewater at the Te Awamutu treatment plant in New Zealand now contains a quarter or less of the maximum allowable level of microbes The closed-pipe bersonInLine units provide full tertiary treatment for up to 40,000 people

The Berson systems were chosen following tests against low pressure open-channel UV systems, which are traditionally used to treat wastewater.

With the UV lamps rotated through 90 degrees, bersonInLine systems are easier to install than other closed-pipe systems.

What is more, they use far fewer UV lamps in comparison with low pressure systems and, when the lamps need replacing, they are easier to change.

The Te Awamutu plant features two bersonInLine 5000 units installed in series.

Each unit contains four medium pressure UV lamps, and their output is continuously monitored by a Berson UVtronic control system.

When this registers a low UV level, internal wipers are automatically triggered to remove deposits from the lamps, ensuring uninterrupted protection against microbial contamination.

The UVtronic also links to the site SCADA control network, providing operational information and alarm functions.

The installation is designed to treat up to 375 m3/hr of effluent at a transmissivity of 45%.
