Purified drinking water is now available again in Basra, Iraq, thanks in part to the astonishing hard work put in by Kazema Industrial Products, the Brook Crompton agent for the region.

Brook Crompton is an industrial motor manufacturer headquartered in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire.

A vast water purification plant servicing this major city had been out of commission since the end of the war, and it was identified as critically important to be brought back on-line to help with the humanitarian relief of the area.

Kellog Brown Root (KBR), one of the major civil and project engineering companies entrusted with the reconstruction of Iraq, set out to organise a fast track project to get the plant operating again.

Critically important to such an undertaking is the reliability of supply of the most vital equipment, and KBR was very demanding when selecting suppliers.

Electric motors are, of course, used throughout such plants and KBR wanted to deal with as few suppliers as possible.

It had no hesitation in appointing Kazema Industrial Products, a Brook Crompton agent based in Kuwait, which was almost immediately to have its mettle tested, as Abder Sadouk recalls: "We were asked to supply nearly 400 motors, ranging in size from 2.2kW to 7.5kW and to a number of specialist specifications.

These all had to be uprated to arduous duty format and delivered within two and a half weeks.

It was a demanding request, but we were confident that the proven team of Brook Crompton and Kazema Industrial Products would rise to the challenge.

"There were some very long nights, lots of favours called in and more than a few hairs being pulled out, but we triumphed in the end, delivering every motor on time and completely to specification.

Knowing that our efforts were part of such an important humanitarian project kept us going through the hardest days and contributed to a tremendous sense of achievement at the end.
