Black and Veatch World of Difference Award
Deadline fast approaching for Black and Veatch World of Difference Award: The end of January is the deadline for entries to CIWEM's second World of Difference Award, sponsored by Black and Veatch
The end of January is the deadline for entries to CIWEM's second World of Difference Award, sponsored by Black and Veatch.
Established to reward and promote the practical application of science and engineering for sustainable environmental improvement, the award focuses on innovative design in water and wastewater projects.
To be presented at the prestigious CIWEM Annual Dinner in April, the winner will receive a special trophy, a framed certificate and a cheque for GBP1000.
The inaugural World of Difference Award was won in 2004 by the Green Roof Water Recycling System (GROW), designed by Water Works UK to save water by processing 'grey' water (collected wash water) and filtering it through a bed of aquatic plants containing bacteria which cleanse the water.
Bill Thomson, Business Development Director at Black and Veatch commented: "Black and Veatch support the World of Difference Award because we want to encourage original ideas that will really make a difference for the better".
Nick Reeves, Executive Director of CIWEM added: "With demand for water putting increasing strain on resources and water wastage in the UK running millions of litres down the drain every day, CIWEM is looking to use this Award to identify and promote good practice in water and wastewater management.
Last year's winner was a system that is cheap, sustainable and timely.
As an international body concerned with the ethics of water use, we were also pleased to support a system ideally suited for export to water-poor countries".
The World of Difference Award is international, and submissions from younger people are encouraged.
The size of the project is immaterial: small projects that make a big difference are encouraged to apply.
The judging panel will consider the originality of the concepts and take into account the age and experience of applicants.
To be eligible for the Award, projects must.
* Relate to the water cycle.
* Be specific, rather than a theoretical design.
* Be innovative and achievable.
* Be beneficial to the environment and demonstrate sustainability.
Submissions should be in the form of a summary report, maximum ten A4 pages in length, including figures, tables and photographs.
Details of how to make a submission are online.
