Major sewage treatment project for City
of Derry
A GBP13M contract by DRD Water Service Northern Ireland will provide an upgrade and extend the existing treatment facilities at Culmore WWTW in Northern Ireland
Black and Veatch, in a joint venture with Dawson-WAM, supported by Hyder Consulting , have been awarded a GBP13M contract by DRD Water Service Northern Ireland to upgrade and extend the existing treatment facilities at Culmore WWTW The existing plant, first constructed in 1979, is situated to the north east of the city on the west bank of the Foyle estuary and currently treats both domestic and industrial wastewater from the City of Derry and its environs

Under the contract the existing inlet works, preliminary treatment and primary treatment stages will be refurbished with additional treatment being provided in the form of a new secondary activated sludge plant followed by final settlement.
Sludge from the plant shall be dewatered to a 27% cake for incineration in Belfast.
Additional facilities at the plant will also include storm flow treatment and odour control.
When completed the plant will be capable of receiving a flow of 2600 l/sec, of which 808 l/sec will be passed to full treatment, equivalent to a PE of 126,000.
Under the contract, Black and Veatch Contracting are responsible for the design, supply, installation and commissioning of all process and MEICA plant.
Dawson-WAM are responsible for all building, civil engineering, architectural and landscaping work whilst Hyder Consulting are providing civil engineering, building and architectural design services.
Following contract award a three month design development stage was carried out by the Black and Veatch Dawson-WAM JV in partnership with Water Service and their representatives, McAdam Design.
Construction activities commenced on site in June 2004 with construction and commissioning completion scheduled for March 2006.
