For the third year, entries are being invited for the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) World of Difference Award, sponsored by Black and Veatch, a leading global engineering, consulting and construction company Entries should be for water and wastewater projects that apply science and engineering for sustainable environmental improvement

To be eligible for the Award, projects must relate to the water cycle and "Be at least at the application stage and specific, rather than a theoretical design, be innovative and achievable, demonstrate sustainability and be beneficial to the environment".

Ian Kirkaldy, UK Regional Director of Client Services at Black and Veatch said, "We are very proud to continue our backing for the World of Difference Award because we want to encourage innovative ideas that make a positive difference to the environment.

Too much water, which is such a precious resource, is wasted, so in keeping with our belief at Black and Veatch, we want to see systems that identify and promote good practice in water and wastewater management" said Kirkaldy.

The 2005 award was presented to Northumbrian Water for the Wear Valley Water Treatment Works in County Durham.

The project included 16,000 new trees in 2ha of woodland, 2km of new footpath and the creation of a renewable energy supply.

Best environmental practice saved tonnes of carbon dioxide being emitted during its construction.

Aside from the prestige of gaining this important prize, the winner of the CIWEM World of Difference Award will be presented with a specially designed trophy, a framed certificate and a cheque for GBP1000.

The winning project will be promoted by CIWEM and featured in several leading water industry and environmental publications.

The World of Difference Award is international and open to all, with the exception of Black and Veatch projects.

Submissions from younger people are encouraged.

The size of the project is immaterial: small projects that make a big difference are encouraged.

The judging panel will consider the originality of the concepts and take into account the age and experience of applicants.

The closing date for entries is 30 January 2006 with the winner announced and the Award presented at the CIWEM Annual Dinner in London in April 2006.

Entries should be in the form of a summary report, up to ten A4 pages in length including illustrations.

For further details of how to make a submission, contact Harriet Greene at CIWEM on awards@ciwem.org.
