Black and Veatch has been selected to provide engineering services and programme and construction management services for Phase II of the Toledo Waterways Initiative.

Black and Veatch recently completed Phase I of the initiative, ahead of schedule and under budget.

Phase II is part of a 15-year, USD450m (GBP258m) development designed to control combined sewer overflows by upgrading the aging sewer system and wastewater treatment facilities in the city of Toledo, Ohio.

'Black and Veatch will deliver a program that ensures improved water quality, environmental benefits and enhances the quality of life for Toledo residents,' said Dan McCarthy, president and chief executive officer of Black and Veatch's global water business.

Phase II is the final 10 years of the waterways initiative and includes design development and implementation of 25 projects.

Among the projects are installation of separate sanitary and storm sewers, construction and optimisation of storage facilities, and modification or installation of additional flow regulators to address the combined sewer areas.

When fully completed, the Toledo Waterways Initiative will significantly reduce sewer overflows, basement backups and discharges of partially treated wastewater into local waterways resulting from heavy rainfalls.

The Black and Veatch team for Phase II engineering services includes the local offices of Arcadis, Jones and Henry, Stantec and TetraTech.
