Independent-Bosch Technology Horizons Award

'Ecology and technology - how can modern technologies protect the environment?' is the theme of this year's Independent-Bosch Technology Horizons Award for young writers.
The award, which was launched in 2006 by Bosch, The Independent newspaper and The Royal Academy of Engineering, provides young people with an opportunity to put pen to paper and write an essay focusing on engineering, science or technology.
The Bosch involvement in the award is in keeping with its dedication to promoting science, technology and engineering to young people in the UK.
"For Bosch, the commitment to technology and innovation to expand the company's strength makes this award a natural step for us" says Robert Meier, managing director for Bosch in the UK.
Bosch spends over 7% of its annual sales revenue on research and development activities and prides itself on its innovation.
This level of investment also enables Bosch to meet increasing technological, ecological and social demands that it hopes will provide inspiration for future generations through the resulting technologies and inventions.
As Robert Meier says, "The knowledge, open-mindedness and creativity of students and graduates are essential for industry and their success in future".
The first Independent-Bosch Technology Horizons Award asked entrants to describe their vision of the next technological revolution.
In total, 217 young people were inspired to write in with their ideas and seven finalists were picked from each of the two age groups, 14-18 years and 19-24 years.
This year's competition gives entrants the chance to win up to GBP1000 as well as prizes for their school.
The winners will also have their work printed in The Independent newspaper.
The closing date for entries is 30th March 2007.
