The Pipeline Industries Guild award for 'Best Technical Paper Presentation' has been awarded to Dr Nick Ryan of Brinker Technology, for his report on Platelet Technology in pipeline leakage studies

The Pipeline Industries Guild (PIG) award for 'Best Technical Paper Presentation' has been awarded by the Aberdeen section to Dr Nick Ryan of Brinker Technology Dr Ryan is the Brinker Technology Project Manager, and has been since the company was created as a spin-out from the University of Aberdeen in December 2003

Dr Ryan's presentation 'Advanced Technologies for Leak Location and Sealing' to the Pipeline Industries Guild, Aberdeen section, on Tuesday 9th November 2004 was voted the Best Technical Presentation of this year's programme.

As well as providing the audience with the background to the patented 'Platelet Technology', originally developed by researchers in the Department of Engineering, University of Aberdeen, Dr Ryan spoke about the first successful commercial implementation which occurred in September 2004 on the BP Foinaven Water Injection System.

The seal created enabled BP to increase water injection from 141,000 to 154,000 bbl/day with an immediate effect on reservoir production.

BP, along with a number of other key North Sea Operators, has been assisting the Company over the past 12 months to develop its Platelet Technology, with a view to an offshore implementation.

Underpinning the technology is an extensive use of Computational Fluid Dynamics modelling of pipeline geometry and fluid conditions in conjunction with Finite Element Analysis, and over three years of extensive physical testing using pressure vessels and flow loops.

These different methods are used to optimise the solution for the client, and hence ensure a successful operation This award from the Pipeline Industries Guild follows on from previous Brinker Technology success including commendations in the category of "Innovative Technology" at both the 2004 and 2005 Scottish Offshore Achievement Awards, and winning the Sir Ian Wood Award for Innovation in the Grampian Awards 2004 for Business Enterprise.

Dr David Horne, PIG Aberdeen Section Chairman 2004 -2005, was pleased to invite Dr Ryan to the Aberdeen Section - Eleventh Annual Dinner Awards 2005 held at the Marcliffe Hotel, Pitfodels on 20th May.

The trophy was sponsored by Det Norske Veritas (DNV) and was presented to Dr Ryan by Donald Brown (Regional Manager, Europe and Middle East, DNV Technology Services).

The evening was attended by those with interests in pipelines worldwide, transporting hydrocarbon products, chemicals, water, wastewater, and many other substances, both on and offshore.

The evening was a huge success with over GBP5000 being raised for two local charities - Linn Moor School and the Aberdeen Children's Society, both Voluntary Service Aberdeen charities.
