International Conference on Pipeline Protection

The 16th International Conference on Pipeline Protection will provide the latest information on research, developments and applications: scheduled for 2005 in Cyprus, BHR has issued a call for papers

A pipeline is often the most environmentally-friendly, efficient and cost-effective way of transporting liquids and gases over short and long distances.

Safe and economic installation and operation is always critical to a pipeline's success but in capital intensive and highly regulated sectors there is also a need to prolong the useful life of existing infrastructure.

The dependability of the pipeline is paramount to protect the surrounding environment and the liquid or gas being transported.

Pipeline operators should adopt a "whole pipe - whole life" approach and use economic assessments to evaluate the best protection products.

The 1996 Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) Directive from the European Council demands that industrial installations - including pipelines - must be fully compliant by 30 October 2007.

Owners and operators will be responsible for the performance of their pipelines and to achieve compliance they must employ "Best Available Techniques" in every area of operations.

For pipelines, the critical factor is often leakage control.

BHR Group's 16th International Conference on Pipeline Protection will provide the latest information on research, developments and applications in this critical area.

The organisers have issued a call for papers for presentation at the event, which will be held in Paphos, Cyprus, 2-4 November 2005.

This biennial event was established in 1975 and is now recognised as the premier technical event on the subject.

Building on the success of its predecessors the 2005 event presents an ideal opportunity for anyone involved in the commissioning, operation and maintenance of pipelines to share experiences across a wide range of applications and conditions.

The conference provides a unique forum for presenting practical solutions and debating the future direction of the pipeline industry.

Before legislation focuses directly on pipelines, industry has the opportunity to agree the economic parameters, the lifetime integrity demands, the investment infrastructure and the importance of standards and specifications in unifying pipeline performance criteria.

Contributions are welcomed in the form of technical papers or case studies on all aspects of pipeline protection including current techniques and new developments.

The Technical Committee recognises the pool of knowledge within the oil and gas, petrochemical and water industries and welcomes papers from all sectors.

Priority will be given to new papers and novel solutions that discuss real applications and experiences.

It is likely that the programme will include papers covering the following themes: New Build: specifications and standards compared to "fit for purpose" commissions; surface preparation, coatings, linings and cathodic protection; protection of high temperature pipelines; offshore inc high temp/high pressure, corrosion resistance, upheaval buckling and CP; steels inc high chrome steels and protection implications.

Existing Installations: pipeline integrity; dealing with breakdowns; operation of very large diameter water pipelines; data acquisition techniques; corrosion monitoring; maintenance; stress cracking.

Rehabilitation: evaluating needs, opportunities and providing solutions; the economics of rehabilitation and evaluating the pipeline asset.

The conference is designed for pipeline operators, contractors, coatings manufacturers and developers, consultants, designers, researchers and anyone associated with the oil and gas, chemical and water industries that need to know about the best way to protect pipes and pipelines.
