Transformer breather self-regenerating desiccant

A Brownell product story
Edited by the Processingtalk editorial team Nov 27, 2007

Brownell Re-Actrans Transformer Breathers are self-reactivating, to eliminate the need for periodic desiccant replacement on power and distribution transformers - up to 500MVa

The Brownell Re-Actrans Transformer Breathers also offer low intermittent power consumption and simple installation combined with no moving parts and minimum maintenance.

Desiccant self-regeneration is accomplished using the natural and environmental thermal cycle of the transformer.

An outward flow of air comes from the increasing plant temperature and an integral pressure switch detects the resultant pressure change to power the proportional control thermal heaters and power circuit to manage the reactivation process, and thereby maintain the highest desiccant adsorption capacity.

The transformer temperature increases can result from an ambient change, solar heater or transformer duty loading and in some cases all three acting collectively.

There are two Re-Actrans models, for oil capacities up to 25,000 litres and transformer power ratings up to 30MVa or capacities up to 125,000 litres with ratings of 30 to 500MVa.

With 3.5A and 7A maximum power consumption respectively, they both use a silica gel desiccant, have humidity saturation indicator windows, maximum 95C operation temperatures and IP65 ratings.
