Plastic and polymer composite gears find many applications in industry, but their benefits still remain unfamiliar to a majority of designers: the seminar enable designers to know when to use them

Plastic and polymer composite gears have found many applications in industry, but their benefits still remain unfamiliar to a majority of designers.

The pros and cons of using plastic gears will be debated at a seminar to be organised by the British Mechanical Power Transmission Association (BMPTA) on September 16.

The seminar will be given by two world renowned experts in this special field, Prof Doug Walton and Dr David Weale, of the Power Transmission Laboratory, School of Engineering, University of Birmingham.

The seminar will be held at the University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham, from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm, when the tutors will give a broad overview of the unique properties of plastics and their use in transmissions.

The BMPTA is intending that the day will provide a real stimulus for designers to consider using these alternative materials in appropriate applications.
