As part of the major redevelopment of the world-renowned Cherry's brewery at Waterford in Ireland, Burkert Fluid Control Systems has supplied 60 valves for a new brewing operation.

The Guinness brewery, which has been virtually rebuilt around a number of existing storage vessels, is one of only two sites producing the secret ingredient -- the Essence of Guinness - that goes into the world-famous stout everywhere it is brewed around the world! The Burkert valves were specified by APV, one of three main contractors at the site, to control services in a number of different areas of the brewery, as Peter Davies of APV explains.

"Angle, diaphragm, globe and solenoid valves have been supplied in either stainless steel, brass or bronze and most are equipped for AS-i connectivity and designed for CIP.

They handle material that includes steam, water, air, nitrogen and cleaning agents.

For this application we have used Burkert valves to control the delivery of nitrogen to the tops of process vessels, water to the heating and cooling operations for the larger vessels, and the steam for sterilising various parts of the yeast plant.

They are fitted after the dosing pumps in the cleaning area and Burkert ATEX-approved diaphragm valves are fitted in Zone 1 dosing areas where flammable ingredients are present".

About the choice of Burkert equipment, Peter said: "Burkert is an approved supplier to Diageo and Guinness, so we were happy to specify them.

They are also very good technically, were able to offer a single source of supply for all the components required and options such as AS-i connectivity were available.".
