When Tesco wanted increased production of custard tarts Kensey Foods needed a new CIP system, and quickly: Carlisle Process Systems provided the skid mounted unit, and it has been working from day one

It is not often a major company takes the time and trouble to say thank-you for a job well done but unsolicited testimonials are becoming somewhat commonplace at Carlisle Process Systems, a leading supplier of top quality process solutions to the dairy, cheese, food and beverage industries The range of equipment to come out of the Carlisle Dorset base includes state-of-the-art cleaning-in-place (CIP) systems, which are more and more sought after by a dairy sector faced with ever more stringent hygiene demands from customers, notably the major supermarket chains

It is the Carlisle expertise in the design, build and installation of CIP systems - the company now has over 120 successful projects behind it - which has led to the latest accolade.

It has come from Kensey Foods, part of the Samworth Brothers group and one of the country's foremost producers of chilled dessert products like custard tarts, banana splits, and apple turnovers.

The only customer for Kensey is Tesco, and they, in common with their rivals, are increasingly keen on maintaining the very best quality and hygiene standards.

So when Kensey were asked to increase production they needed a new CIP system - and quickly.

Carlisle Process Systems, which had installed the original CIP equipment at the Kensey bakery in Launceston, Cornwall, won the contract.

A design team got to work and produced a variation on a standard CIP unit, which was then skid-mounted and fitted with Telemechanique controls using automation prepared by Carlisle software engineers.

Pre-despatch testing at the Carlisle factory was overseen by both their experts and Kensey staff before the system was taken to site where it was quickly up and running without any problems.

The result is the replacement of an electrically-heated system using manual routing valves by a fully automated steam-heated system which meets all current legislative demands as well as those set by the supermarkets.

Paul Griffin, business development manager of the Carlisle Dairy, Food and Beverage Group said: 'Because of all the testing we had done before despatch, it was virtually a case of plugging in and getting on with the job.

It worked from day one and the customer is very pleased with it.

So much so that we had a 'phone call from them saying how well it was operating and how happy they were.

We have many satisfied customers, testified by a significant level of repeat business, but not many take the trouble to publicly praise us".

Mr Griffin says most of the credit must go to the Carlisle technical team which is used to meeting the stringent requirements of the company's CIP customers.

"Everything has to be kept at top level by dairy food producers because they are constantly being faced with a demand for higher and higher standards of traceability and recordability by the supermarket companies," he said.

And over at Kensey they are convinced they chose wisely when they opted to go back to Carlisle.

Nick Howes one of the hygiene operators who uses the CIP set says: "Since the installation of the new CIP set in our cream department it has taken a lot of manual time-consuming tasks away from the operators, leaving them free to do other jobs.

It is a very user-friendly system and all the relevant information is displayed clearly on the touch screen making it easy to see what is happening during a clean".

"The system is made in such a way that it makes training operators in its use very easy.

After installation, Carlisle's Tony Emm went through the system and the results we are now getting are very encouraging.".
