Carlisle puts safety at the forefront

A CPS: Tetra Pak Cheese and Powder Systems product story

Carlisle Process Systems is a safety conscious company, in the supply of equipment for the UK food production sector, and now this attitude has resulted in official recognition - twice over!

Carlisle Process Systems has always been among the more safety conscious companies in the manufacture and supply of equipment for the UK's food production sector, and now the insistence on stringent rules and practices being observed has paid off with official recognition - twice over.

Dorset-based Carlisle has achieved SAFEcontractor accreditation from National Britannia on behalf of the Health and Safety Executive.

The accreditation has coincidentally been achieved at the same time that a number of key personnel have each been awarded a 'Food Safety Passport', following completion of a course that satisfies the requirements of the scheme run jointly by the Institution for Occupational Safety and Health and the Safety Pass Alliance.

Graham Witt, operations manager with the Carlisle Dairy, Food and Beverage group, is delighted with the dual recognition which he says means the company continues to demonstrate its commitment to Health and Safety enabling continued access to all the food and drink producing companies in the country.

''Without accreditations like these, companies will find it more and more difficult to win contracts,'' said Mr Witt.

''There is a growing list of food and drink producers who will not allow anyone on their site without safety accreditation''.

The list includes the likes of Nestle, Safeway, the Kellogg Company and the Federation of Bakers and it is growing all the time.

But so too is the Carlisle roll of staff with the right credentials.

"And we have put in place procedures to ensure many more of our employees qualify.

In this way we know our growing portfolio of customers will get the best safety deal - and also that we will continue to win new business," said Mr Witt.

The SAFEcontractor registration scheme is used by many large organisations as their primary means of selecting contractors to work at their premises.

''With many it is now a case of no accreditation, no entry because of increasingly stringent health and safety controls,'' said Mr Witt.

''But because we have our SAFEcontractor accreditation, we can provide concrete proof of our health and safety competency''.

And as far as the IOSH-SPA passport scheme is concerned, Carlisle Process Systems will continue to send its workforce on the training course which is geared specifically to the requirements of those working in the food and drink sector.
