Leaders in the design and manufacture of quality cheese making equipment, Denmark based Damrow A/S has recently installed an 18,000-litre Enclosed Cottage Cheese vat into the Arla Foods in Sweden

European leaders in the design and manufacture of quality cheese making equipment, Denmark based Damrow A/S, part of the Carlisle Process Systems (CPS) group, has recently installed an 18,000-litre Enclosed Cottage Cheese Vat (ECCV) into the Arla Foods production facility at Skovde, Sweden Arla Foods, whose brands include top names Lurpak, Cravendale and Anchor, are the largest dairy company in Europe

Skovde is the only dairy within Arla in Europe that produces cottage cheese and the new vat was required to meet increased demand for its products.

Within 16 weeks of ordering the ECCV, Damrow were ready to deliver and it was installed in only three days in June 2004.

Commissioning engineer at Damrow, Kenneth Mikkelsen said, "Due to detailed advance planning the installation and commissioning ran very smoothly at Skovde and the vat was quickly up and running with the minimum of down time and no loss of product.

Also, all product produced during testing was of first class quality and went to market".

The ECCV arrived in Skovde on the Monday, and was placed, levelled and fixed in the factory by the end of the day.

After installing the heating system and connecting local process piping, and mechanical and electrical services, testing commenced.

Extensive testing was undertaken before the ECCV became fully operational in the production line, this included water trials and ensuring that cleaning-in-place was functioning satisfactorily along with recipe adjustments to ensure that the cottage cheese was produced in accordance with Arla Foods product requirements.

Ultimately, Damrow exceeded all expectations and it was found that the quality of the end product from the ECCV was much better than from the existing vats, resulting in a greater yield equalling 5% of extra cheese per batch.

The final result is perfect cottage cheese every-time.

Mr Tyggve Ekstroem the Arla Foods project manager said: "The cheese grains are of an excellent quality, the right size and no fines".

Key features of this high specification vat include unique construction, highly efficient and exact cutting of the coagulum and extremely accurate and reliable control of the heating profile.

The Damrow ECCV was also supplied with a fully programmable control panel, which enables the operator to programme it to meet different production needs.

Damrow are renowned as experts in the art of making cottage cheese and this latest success story follows on from a recent installation of a complete cottage cheese production line for a large dairy in Minsk, Belarus where the customer was as equally impressed with the quality of equipment and excellent service provided by Damrow.

Consolidation of sales activities within the CPS group means that Damrow equipment is generally available worldwide either through sister companies in USA, Canada, UK and Ireland or direct from Damrow or local agents for other countries.
