Sunpower Products in Kenya produces artisan farmhouse cheeses in Kenya's highlands: recently delivered is a skid-mounted, cheese-milk pasteuriser from CPS in Dorset, to help boost their production

CPS IS THE BIG CHEESE IN AFRICA CPS has long been renowned among European producers for the high quality of its equipment, but now its reputation has extended to the African continent with the purchase of a pasteuriser by Sunpower Products in Kenya The East African enterprise, run by David and Susan Brown, produces cheeses hand made by craftsmen trained on site and using milk from the couple's own cows, which are reared on their smallholding with the yield supplemented by carefully-tested milk purchased from neighbouring smallholders

The Browns cheeses have won numerous awards including accolades from the Nantwich International Cheese Show in Cheshire, where they have been exhibiting since 2000, and where CPS is a regular in the trade stands section.

Nearer home, their Kalloumi cheese has been crowned champion exhibit at the East African Cheese Festival staged in Nairobi.

The cheeses, which come from Kenya's Highland region, have generally been produced using a batch process, a lengthy and not very efficient system.

So the company wanted something which would help speed up production and ensure better quality products.

Enter CPS, a global provider of quality equipment and turnkey systems to the hygienic liquid processing industries.

From their Dorset base they have been looking after the needs of the dairy industry for many a decade and now have a team dedicated to the dairy, food and beverage sectors.

The Browns got together with CPS business development manager Paul Griffin, and he and his team shipped out to Africa a skid-mounted, cheese-milk pasteuriser capable of handling 2,000 litres each hour.

The pasteuriser has been equipped with a steam modulating control system for accurate temperature control and a variable speed feed pump regulated by an in-line flow meter.

The highly-regarded Fischer plate heat exchanger, complete with heat regeneration section, ensures maximisation of operating efficiency.

With the arrival of the pasteuriser CPS is helping yet another small-scale business - and they are becoming legion both at home and abroad - achieve optimum output and proving that robust, state-of-the-art equipment is not solely the province of the big players.

Paul Griffin, says: ''We can obviously still cater for the major producers but we can also put together a cost-effective bespoke system suitable for small processors in the cheese, dairy, food and beverage industries.

Size does not matter, all our customers get the same quality of service and the same robustly designed and built equipment''.

So, Africa's cheese connoisseurs should now enjoy even better products from a family business, which has grown from small beginnings in the Browns' kitchen, to offer a wide selection of high-quality, artisan farmhouse cheeses from a smallholding which is managed biodynamically and which provides an income for literally hundreds of small family farms in the region.

David Brown summarised: ''We have received excellent service from CPS".
