Twelve I/O wireless functionality with Bluetooth

A connectBlue product story
Edited by the Processingtalk editorial team Apr 5, 2007

connectBlue extends its product portfolio with Bluetooth I/O Modules, which can be purchased either as OEM modules or as a Bluetooth I/O Developer kit

The module implements wireless I/O functionality and is ideal to use in a wireless remote control system for industrial use.

The Bluetooth I/O Module implements wireless I/O functionality with up to 12 digital input and output signals with latency at only 5-10 ms.

The signals can be controlled either by a serial protocol on the host side or by the I/O signals on the receiver side.

The Bluetooth I/O Module is available in long range or short range versions and with options like internal or external antenna, UART or RS232 interface and with different connector options.

"Some of the typical applications include remote control of cranes and supervision of different machines where a small number of signals can be transferred to one central control station," said Rolf Nilsson, President of connectBlue.

"We are currently using the Bluetooth I/O Module in two different solutions for wireless remote control of baggage cranes.

The cranes will be served either by pneumatic or electrical control and some of the key benefits are increased flexibility for the crane operators in terms of height and distance to the crane," said Kjell Andreasson, President of the Swedish company EBL Systems, a supplier of ergonomic baggage and industrial handling systems.

The Bluetooth I/O Module uses a variant of the standard Bluetooth Serial Port Adapter where the I/O functionality is implemented using a protocol on top of the Bluetooth Serial Port Profile (SPP).

Additional features are configurable sample and filter time as well as link supervisory and I/O-failsafe functions.

The modules are Bluetooth Qualified, radio approved as well as compliant with EMC, safety and medical standards.

connectBlue is a leading provider of wireless solutions for demanding applications in segments like industrial automation, medical, instrumentation, diagnostics, logistics / transportation, vehicles and point of sale.

Based on Bluetooth technology, WLAN and 802.15.4, connectBlue provides ready-to-use products and modules as well as custom design solutions in both hardware and software.

connectBlue AB is based in Malmo, Sweden and was founded in 2000.
