Ceetak, the leading UK developer and specifier of seal products and mouldings, has launched a new range of treated O-rings that have been specially developed by Parker Worldwide Seal Group.

The new ParCoat range of treated O-rings has been designed both to aid the fitting of seals in industrial and automotive applications and to significantly reduce the potential of mechanical damage to each O-ring during installation.

As a result, the new O-rings can considerably shorten assembly times and extend the operating life of seals used in couplings and fittings.

To date, fitting uncoated O-rings often requires high assembly pressures that can either cause damage to the seal or result in components becoming jammed.

The conventional method of overcoming this problem is to introduce a lubricant during the assembly process or to add a coating to the seal during manufacture.

However, the coatings used to date have not generally given significant improvement in the sliding ability of the seal material, while the use of additional oils often soil surrounding components.

The new ParCoat O-rings are manufactured in a choice of NBR, HNBR, EPDM, FKM and FVMQ compounds, each of which is treated using a special polymer film that dramatically reduces frictional resistance without affecting the physical or chemical properties of the basic compounds.

The film is typically less than 5 microns in thickness on standard coatings yet can reduce assembly pressures, even in complex installations, by more than fifty per cent compared with uncoated and traditionally coated O-rings.

In addition, the polymer film is transparent, allowing different compounds to be easily identified by their specific colours.

The new ParCoat O-rings can be used in both manual assembly operations and automatic feeding systems.

Prior to installation they can also be elongated by as much as 150%, without causing the 5 micron antifriction coating to fracture.
