Decanter centrifuges using Duplex steel
Centriquip, the UK's largest manufacturer of decanter centrifuges, always uses duplex steel (a combination of the common austenitic and harder wearing ferritic steels) for high wear components

But when it comes to industrial products the decisions shift.
Reliability, in the processing industry, is king.
Unscheduled downtime is unacceptable and anything an equipment supplier can do to avoid it should be a 'no brainer'.
That's why Centriquip, the UK's largest manufacturer of decanter centrifuges, always uses Duplex steel (a combination of the common austenitic and harder wearing ferritic steels) for its high wear components.
Yes, it's more expensive, but a few pounds on the purchase price of a high value capital item pales into insignificance if a breakdown or additional service cycle can be avoided.
John Ball, a Director of Centriquip, feels strongly that the decision to stick with Duplex steel is a good one despite its higher cost.
"Duplex steel is stronger, harder wearing and resists corrosion better than ordinary 316L for example," he said.
"By using Duplex steel for our flights and bowls we can reduce wear and corrosion - significantly extending service periods and reducing maintenance costs for our customers".
Maintenance costs alone are, of course, minor by comparison to the cost of an unscheduled shut down.
Centriquip does not suggest that the use of Duplex steel is in any way a replacement for a well managed maintenance programme however, with all the other benefits the material provides, its contribution to avoiding an expensive and disruptive stoppage cannot be ignored.
Another benefit comes from the high strength of Duplex steels, which also allows Centriquip to reduce the weight of some major components: "Having a lighter rotating assembly allows us to reduce the power of the main drive motor making our machines more energy efficient and environmentally friendly," John explained.
