Cedip will supply a further advanced IR thermography system for monitoring components inside the EFDA Tokamak Fusion reactor at the Joint European Torus research group based in Abingdon, UK

The new order from the European Fusion Development Agreement follows the recent selection of Cedip for the ITER-project and the successful operation of a series of Cedip IR thermography systems at JET and the Torus Supra Fusion Reactor in Cadarache, France.

The EFDA selection acknowledges the Cedip expertise in supplying specialised infrared systems for monitoring plant and processes within hostile environments.

Based upon the Cedip Silver camera technology, operating in the 3-5 micron region, the new IR thermography system will monitor the plasma temperature inside the reactor through a set of IR endoscopes.

The installed Silver IR cameras will be specially adapted to resist the intense magnetic field generated by the superconductive electromagnets in the fusion reactor.

Installed inside the reactor facility, an area inaccessible during time of operation, the camera will be integrated with the main data processing system of the JET Tokamak for the setting of parameters, synchronising acquisition and gathering of data.

The Cedip advanced 32-bit Altair thermography software will be used to remotely control the camera via fibre optics as well as transfer and store acquired data.

The European Fusion Development Agreement (EFDA) is an agreement between Europe's 29 fusion research institutions and the European Commission to strengthen their coordination and collaboration, and to participate in collective activities.

Its activities include fusion technology research and development, the exploitation of the world's largest fusion experiment, the Joint European Torus (JET) in the UK, and contributions to international collaborations such as the ITER-project in France.
