CBA discusses GHS with Hong Kong officials

A Chemical Business Association product story
Edited by the Processingtalk editorial team Sep 24, 2008

The Chemical Business Association (CBA) has hosted a group of senior officials from the Hong Kong Labour Department.

The group gathered to discuss the implementation of Globally Harmonised System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) into Europe and its wider implications for the worldwide industry.

The visitors included highly qualified chemists and professionals experienced in chemical labelling and enforcement of dangerous substances regulations.

Hong Kong is considering whether to adopt the GHS for chemical substances and is examining any legal or social issues that may arise as a result of its implementation.

The purpose of the visit was to study the implementation of GHS in the UK, as Hong Kong currently operates the UK legal system.

As part of the overseas training exercise, the senior chemist and three occupational safety officers engaged in discussions with Peter Newport and Douglas Leech of CBA.

This covered aspects of the scope, process of development of the system, communication between government and industry stakeholders, and the timescale.
