A high speed K1000 carousel bag filling system from weighing and bagging specialists Chronos Richardson, is helping Nelstrops meet growing customer expectations for their prestigious range of flours

A high speed K1000 carousel bag filling system supplied by leading weighing and bagging specialists Chronos Richardson, is helping Nelstrops meet growing customer expectations for their prestigious range of flours at Albion Mills The Nelstrop mill is situated on Lancashire Hill in Stockport, an area which has a long history of milling

Recently, when a new suite of offices was under construction at Nelstrops, builders unearthed a heavy millstone, a telling memory of a windmill which once stood astride the hill.

The company has a long family tradition in milling dating back 175 years to the time when William Nelstrop set up his corn dealing business in 1820.

The company has successfully come through periods of significant change in UK flour milling and today three members of the Nelstrop family are part of the top management team in the only independent family controlled flour mill in North West England, Scotland and Wales.

From 250 milling companies operating in the UK before the Second World War, over sixty years on, Nelstrops is now one of only around 20 still in existence - a clear case of the 'survival of the fittest'.

As Technical Director Conrad Syers explains: "To remain in front in this highly competitive market, the company has invested heavily in modern technology, ranging from plant and equipment for the factory floor through to the latest management and sales tools.

We now have a world class automated, microchip-controlled, flour mill with continuous computerised on-line quality monitoring and full computer process control of wheat conditioning, cleaning and milling".

System integration is the key to the success of the installation at Nelstrops.

Chronos Richardson have extensive experience in designing integrated bagging systems, ensuring that all peripheral equipment works in harmony with the main bagging unit.

This optimises productivity whilst maintaining robust reliability.

The K1000 features a compact design ideally suited to the high speed filling of dusty products such as flour.

At Albion Mills, weighed flour is fed from two Chronoweigh E55 netweighers situated above the carousel.

These are supplied with product from a holding hopper by twin screw feeders.

The six head K1000 has an automatic bag placer and three vertical possers.

The possers provide an oscillating force to the bottom of the filled bags to remove air and compact the flour to ensure regular shaped bags.

At the start of the filling cycle, the automatic bag placer offers a correctly orientated, open bag up to the first filling spout, where it is clamped in place.

Additional pincer type spreading and side clamps prevent dust emission and ensure that both gusseted and pillow bags retain their flat closed form.

The first net weigher then discharges the flour into the bag whilst at this position.

The unit then indexes round so that the bag is over the first vertical bottom posser for de-aeration to take place.

The carousel then indexes this bag round to the second posser, while another empty bag is located under the filling spout.

The twin net weighers operate alternately thereby ensuring a constant supply of weighed flour.

After three separate possing operations, the compacted bag is released into the transfer unit where the bag mouth is held closed and under complete control.

The transfer unit then automatically transports the bag into the closing mechanism where the top is folded and sewn, before being conveyed to the palletiser.

Throughout the filling and closing process, the bags are sealed from the atmosphere, with no chance of product contamination.

Conrad Syers is very upbeat about the K1000: "Total customer satisfaction is at the heart of our company philosophy.

Product packing and presentation is a vital part of this and at the end of the process we need to ensure this is carried out as quickly and professionally as possible.

We are delighted with the smooth operation of the Chronos Richardson system.

The high accuracy of the unit maintains specified target weights and minimises 'giveaway'.

The installation and commissioning processes were very straightforward, helped significantly by the field bus technology employed in the K1000.

The bagging process is fully automatic and all the only operator has to do is select the product to be bagged and ensure the bag magazine is kept supplied with bags.

During normal production we fill 16 kg bags at speeds up to 1100 bags an hour, but we also have the flexibility to be able to fill bags up to 32 kg.".
