Standardising on Control Techniques HVAC
drives

Mark Eire BV, Ireland's leading manufacturer of air handling units for HVAC heating, ventilating and air conditioning, has standardised on AC variable speed drives from Control Techniques

Mark Eire is part of the Mark Holding Group of Holland, and manufactures a wide range of stand alone and integrated air handling units and heaters in Macroom, County Cork, for the environmental control of commercial and industrial premises With a high throughput of units handling from 7000 to 40,000 cu metres per hour, the company uses the Commander SK AC drive (2.2 kW - 22 kW) from Control Techniques as its drive of choice

"We switched over some four years ago, from a system of geared pulleys altering the air volume, to variable speed drives" explains Paraic O Conaola, Purchasing Manager at the plant: "From the outset, we used Control Techniques Commander SE drives, then switched to the new Commander SK when that range was introduced.

Whilst price is important in this very competitive market, the physical size of the drives is a crucial factor.

The Commander SK drives are so compact that they can be integrated into the air handling unit itself, eliminating the need for a separate cubicle.

In commercial and industrial premises, space costs money!".

The switch to variable speed drives improved the energy efficiency of the air handling units, precisely matching motor speed to the actual air demand.

"The Commander SK units are very quick and easy to set up" according to Electrical Technician, Brenda Curran: "It's just a matter of a couple of minutes.

We use the autotune feature, where the drive sets up the basic parameters itself and smooths out any motor noise.

We simply set the minimum speed, usually 38 Hz and the maximum 50 Hz.

The display shows diagnostics too.

Final set-up is carried out on site since air volumes are rarely exactly as quoted and this is very easy to do".

The Commander SK has market-leading performance and features, from ease of fitting, set-up and use, to dynamic response, connectivity to all major fieldbus networks and easy-to-fit and set-up features that encompass some 90% of applications.

Size is frequently a key issue both with OEMs and end users, as it is with Mark Eire.

Across the range of the Commander SK family, the key competitors offer drives that are up to 50% larger by volume and, typically, with panel footprints of over 40% bigger.

This increase in the power to size ratio has been achieved by a radical rethink of drive design and much of this is down to new technologies and composite materials used in its enclosure.

"We are very pleased with the support we get here in Ireland from Control Techniques" says Paraic O Conaola, "with good delivery times, excellent training for our staff and, of course, competitive prices". Request a free brochure from Control Techniques ...
